NEW DELHI, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced a financial relief of one million Indian Rupees (approximately 14,300 U.S. dollars) to the families of those dead, and 100,000 Indian Rupees (approximately 1,430 U.S. dollars) for the injured in a major fire incident in the Indian capital.

At least 43 people died and more than 50 injured in the fire incident. The injured are undergoing medical treatment at four different hospitals.

Medical Director of the "Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital" Kishore Singh reportedly said "the condition of those injured is not serious, have been kept under observation. 34 people were brought dead to the hospital."

Nine others died during treatment at hospitals, said media reports.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal also ordered an enquiry into the fire incident.

The fire broke out in north Delhi's Filmistan area in the early hours of Sunday when more than 100 people, mostly labourers, were asleep inside a four-storey building.

The labourers, most of them hailing from eastern state of Bihar, were engaged in making school-bags. They worked inside the building during day and slept there at night.

According to an eyewitness, the fire broke out due to a short circuit.

Illegal industrial activities were being carried out inside the ill-fated building, even as it didn't have a license from Fire Department, said media reports. Delhi Police is learnt to have arrested the brother of the building's owner.

Filmistan is mainly a residential area in Delhi, and known for housing small illegal units manufacturing various kinds of products using plastic and paper as raw materials. The area is too congested and the fire-fighters had to face a lot of difficulties in gaining access to the building and douse the fire.

This is being described as one the biggest fire incidents in Delhi's history.
