TIRANA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission (EC) will organize an international donors conference in Tirana to help Albania's recovery from a powerful earthquake that hit the country on Nov. 26, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) delegation to Albania Luigi Soreca said on Friday.

Talking about the European Council's conclusions reached during the EU leaders' meeting held on Thursday in Brussels, Soreca said that EC will organize a donors conference for Albania.

"EU stands in solidarity with Albania in light of the recent earthquake. EC welcomes the Commission's announcement to provide humanitarian assistance and to organize a donors conference," twitted Soreca.

Following Soreca's announcement, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his gratitude for the solidarity shown by the EU leaders.

Rama praised the decision to organize the donors conference in January in Tirana, saying that the conference will support the reconstruction program of the country.

The idea for an international donors conference was given in early December by French President Emmanuel Macron, aiming to help the Balkan country which was hit by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that killed 51 and left thousands of people homeless.
