TEHRAN, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Friday denounced the remarks by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas over Iran's "crackdown" on recent protests as "irresponsible."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi was quoted by the official news agency IRNA as saying that Maas' comments over the Iranian "riots" were "irresponsible and meddlesome."

He was responding to Maas' remarks on Thursday that Germany condemned Iran's "crackdown" on the recent protests over gas price hike, during which he said "hundreds (of protesters) have been killed."

Mousavi said that the world has not forgotten how Germany armed the regime of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein with chemical weapons which were used against Iranian and Iraqi peoples during the Iran-Iraq war.

He urged Germany to honor what he called "the fundamental principles of human rights ... discreetly, comprehensively and neutrally."

On Nov. 15, Iranian government rationed gasoline consumption for private cars and raised gas price by 50 percent, which sparked protests and violent clashes in many cities across the country.
