RABAT, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan security services said on Saturday that it had seized 650 kg of cannabis in the southern city of Agadir.

Members of the judicial police, supported by the Regional Intervention Squad of Agadir, caught a vehicle loaded with drugs, said Moroccan police in a statement.

The driver who refused to comply, crossed the security barrier and endangered the lives of policemen, the statement added.

The suspects fired gunshots, using a hunting rifle, against a police car which deviated from its path, injuring two police officers before fleeing the scene, it said.

Police elements fired warning bullets, which helped catch the vehicle and seize the drug, and a judicial investigation was opened to arrest all the persons involved in this case, it added.

Despite efforts in cracking down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

The Moroccan security authorities have seized more than 112 tons of cannabis and derivatives as of Sept. 15 this year, official statistics showed.
