BERLIN, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Leipzig took the lead in the standings for the moment after beating relegation threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf 3-0 in the 15th round of Bundesliga on Saturday.
The "Bulls" reaped their sixth straight win in the league as goals from Patrick Schick, Timo Werner and Nordi Mukiele sealed all three points on home soil.
Julian Nagelsmann's men caught a fairy-tale start into the game as Schick needed only two minutes to break the deadlock after volleying home a cross from Konrad Laimer.
The hosts remained in control of the proceedings on the pitch still they were unable to extend their lead as Marcel Sabitzer and Schick failed to make the most of their promising chances.
Dusseldorf almost punished Leipzig for their wastefulness but Dawid Kownacki's hammer from the edge of the box got denied by the right post just before the break.
After the interval, Leipzig turned up and created a number of chances but they lacked in accuracy and needed a foul play penalty to double the lead. Werner made no mistake and converted from the spot into the bottom left to score his 16th goal in his 15th Bundesliga game with 58 minutes into the game.
The 2-0 lead took the wind out of Dusseldorf's sails while Leipzig continued to press forward and scored the third goal through substitute Mukiele, who headed home a cross from Sabitzer in the closing period.
"My team played very well. I am overall satisfied. We had many goalscoring opportunities and had everything under control," Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.
The 10th win of the season lift Leipzig on the first place with a two-point advantage to second placed Borussia Monchengladbach. Meanwhile Dusseldorf sit on the 16th position which is a relegation playoff spot.
The following fixtures conclude the 15th round in Bundesliga on Saturday: Wolfsburg encounter Monchengladbach, and Schalke clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.
