TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A MiG-29 fighter jet belonging to the Iranian army crashed in the mountainous area of Iran's northwestern Ardabil province on Wednesday morning, Iran's army announced.

No information about the fate of the pilot is available so far, the announcement said, according to official IRNA news agency.

The snowy whether condition and the rough mountainous area have slowed down the search for the pilot, it said.

Rescue operators with the helicopters are also hunting the area for the wreckage of the plane, Majid Mohammad Gharibani, an official in Ardabil province governor general, was quoted as saying by IRNA.

The Red Crescent Society of Ardabil province said the plane has crashed at Baba Maqsood peak of Sabalan Mountain, according to Press TV.

The fighter jet went down during a functional check flight following an overhaul, it said.
