Profile: Kiribati's President Taneti Mamau

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Kiribati's President Taneti Mamau will pay a state visit to China on Jan. 4-11 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The following is a profile of Mamau.

Mamau, 60, graduated from the University of the South Pacific, the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland, and gained a bachelor's degree in arts and a master's degree in economics.

He has worked for Kiribati's Public Service Office, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Commerce as permanent secretary, among other positions. In 2007, he was elected to parliament and then re-elected several times.

In March 2016, Mamau was elected as the fifth president of Kiribati, also serving as the country's foreign minister.

Mamau is married to Teiraeng and has two children.
