WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- A massive crash on a highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania on Sunday morning killed at least five people and injured dozens of others, authorities said.

The crash happened around 3:34 a.m. local time (0834 GMT) on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Mount Pleasant Township, the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety said.

The crash involves two tractor trailers, a tour bus and passenger vehicles, tweeted Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo.

"About 60 patients have been transported to three area hospitals in Westmoreland County," DeFebo said in another tweet. "Coroner has confirmed five fatalities."

The turnpike was shut down to traffic from the New Stanton to Breezewood exits, an 86-mile (138-km) stretch, according to the spokesman.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike, a toll highway, runs for 360 miles (579 km) across Pennsylvania.
