NEW DELHI, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of Shiite Muslims in Indian capital New Delhi on Tuesday protested against the killing of influential Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, police said.

The protesters including women and children carried placards of Soleimani along with Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and shouted anti-U.S. slogans.

The protesters took a march from Teen Murti Road and tried to move toward the U.S. embassy in Chanakyapuri. However, policemen stopped them from going close to the diplomatic enclave.

Soleimani, former commander of the Quds Force of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), was killed leaving Baghdad international airport on Friday in a U.S. drone attack.

The killing of Soleimani has further escalated the tensions between the U.S. and Iran with the later saying it would avenge Soleimani's killing.
