COPENHAGEN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Danish woman's soccer team has been drawn against Norway in their first match of the Algarve Cup in Portugal, announced the Danish Ballgame Union (DBU) on Twitter Tuesday.

Denmark and Norway will kick off their tournament on March 4 in the quarter-final encounter with both teams assured three matches in the tournament, no matter in which direction they progress.

If Denmark were to win, the Danes would face the winner of Germany v.s. Sweden match in a semi-final showdown while the quarter-final losers must meet in two placement matches.

The subsequent semi-final winner then moves into a prestigious final for the third match against either Portugal, New Zealand, Belgium or Italy.

The 2020 Algarve Cup has been reconfigured to run according to a traditional knock-out tournament. In previous years, it began with group games with the winner progressing to a knock-out stage.

Lars Sondergaard, the Danish coach has stated that the Algarve Cup provides a useful test before the next important matches in their European Championship qualification group in April 2020.

The Algarve Cup is an invitational tournament for national teams in women's association football hosted by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Denmark, who has already won the first five matches in the European Championship group, will face testing matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Malta on April 9 and 14, respectively.
