TEHRAN, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. forces could not intercept any missile of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched at U.S. bases in Iraq on Wednesday, the Deputy Commander for Operations of IRGC Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan said.
Iran's missiles "precisely hit their intended targets," Nilforoushan was quoted as saying by Press TV.
According to the military official, even though U.S. forces across the region, including in the Ayn al-Asad air base, were on high alert and fully prepared prior to the IRGC strikes, they completely failed to intercept the missiles fired by the IRGC.
The IRGC targeted al-Asad because it was the headquarters "for planning and executing the U.S. terrorist operations," he added.
The IRGC managed to destroy the U.S. command center in the region, Nilforoushan said, adding that any potential act of mischief by the enemy would be met with a "staggering, painful, crushing, and regret-inducing response."
The U.S. forces assasinated Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of Quds Force of the IRGC in an airstrike near Baghdad international airport on Friday.
In retaliation, IRGC launched multiple missile attacks on the U.S. bases in Iraq on Wednesday.
