LUSAKA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Sweden has given the World Food Program (WFP) 2 million U.S. dollars to help meet the food and nutrition needs of people affected by drought in Zambia, a WFP official said on Wednesday.
WFP Representative in Zambia Jennifer Bitonde said the funds will enable the organization to procure and deliver 1,435 tons of food to almost 400,000 vulnerable people to cover their food and nutrition needs for one month.
She said in a statement that Sweden's support was critical as it will help sustain the increasing needs after drought and prolonged dry spells left about 2.3 million people severely food insecure and in need of assistance.
According to her, the WFP will work closely with other partners to monitor food distributions to ensure that resources are channeled to those most in need.
