LES ROUSSES, France, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Russian biathlete Alena Mokhova snatched the first gold medal of the sport at the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) here on Saturday.

In sunny and windy weather conditions, Mokhova missed one shot in prone and standing each to clock a match-leading time of 32:26.7.

Mokhova's time at the first shooting position only ranked 16th, but she steadily improved her performance with clean shooting in the following two positions, which powered her to top of the podium.

Local favorite Jeanne Richard, who also had two errors in shooting, finished the race 1 minute and 3.8 seconds behind.

The bronze medal belonged to Belarusian Yuliya Kavaleuskaya with a gap of 1 minute and 32.8 seconds from Mokhova.

China's Ding Yuhuan, flag bearer of the the delegation in Thursday's opening ceremony, finished 30th after missing six shots in total.

"I'm not satisfied with overall performance, especially in shooting," admitted the 16-year-old Chinese biathlete.

"I had expected to stand on the podium. But I didn't do quite well in the race," she added.

"Her skiing is satisfactory, but due to weather condition and unstable wind, she missed six shots, which had much impact on her. That's a pity," said Jiang Yang, who took charge of the Chinese biathlon team during the Games.
