BERLIN, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Following a mass evacuation of some 14,000 residents from their homes in Germany's Dortmund, two unexploded bombs from World War II discovered in the city were defused by experts on Sunday.

The Dortmund Police tweeted on Sunday afternoon that two 250-kilogram bombs were safely defused in the city's southwest, and the residents can return to their homes.

Local media said earlier that four suspected bombs from World War II had been discovered in a densely populated quarter, but two of the subjects were later found to be no explosives.

Starting Saturday, a total of 14,000 people were asked to leave their homes.Dortmund's main railway station and the city's iconic football museum were closed due to the disposal.

Local media reported that the two defused bombs included an American bomb and a British bomb. In Germany, unexploded bombs from the Second World War are still found repeatedly.
