QUITO, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Jordi Cruyff, the son of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff, has been appointed head coach of Ecuador, the South American country's football federation (FEF) said late on Monday.

The announcement came during a FEF event in captial Quito, whose attendees included Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno.

"It's a pleasure to be here. The warmth I have felt since the moment I arrived [on Sunday] has been amazing," Cruyff said.

"We're going to have a super fast adaptation. We are prepared for the challenge that comes our way, with difficult games, but that is also the beauty of our work," he added.

Cruyff, a former attacking midfielder who was capped nine times for the Netherlands, turned to management in 2009 and spent the past two years in charge of Chinese Super League club Chongqing Dangdai Lifan.

The 45-year-old's first task with Ecuador will be to prepare the Tricolor for the South American zone's 2022 World Cup qualifying tournament, which begins in March. Ecuador's first match will be a visit to Argentina on March 26.

The Tricolor will also participate in the Copa America in Argentina and Colombia, starting on June 12.

Ecuador have been without a head coach since Colombian Hernan Dario Gomez was sacked last July following the team's poor showing at the Copa America in Brazil.

They have since been led on an interim basis by Argentinian Jorge Celico.
