SAO PAULO, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Palmeiras midfielder Matheus Fernandes is set to join Barcelona as the Spanish giants reinforce their squad for the second half of the season.
The 21-year-old didn't train with the Brazilian Serie A club on Tuesday following days of talks between his representatives and officials from both clubs.
Barcelona agreed to pay Palmeiras seven million euros (7.8 million US dollars) up front plus another 4.5 million US dollars in performance-based bonuses, according to the Globo Esporte news service.
The former Brazil U-20 player is expected to undergo a medical and sign a contract within days.
Barcelona were also linked with Fernandes in 2017 following his breakthrough campaign with Botafogo's first team.
He will be the third Brazilian in Barcelona's squad, joining midfielder Arthur and goalkeeper Neto.
Barcelona currently lead the 20-team La Liga standings, equal on points with Real Madrid but with a superior goal difference.
