NEW DELHI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Walmart, one of the world's largest retailers, has pruned its Indian workforce by sacking 56 employees in a bid to "restructure" its business activity in India, local media reported on Wednesday.
Among the retrenched employees, eight were in senior management while 48 in the middle and lower management. The sacked employees have been offered enhanced severance benefits and outplacement services to support their "transition."
Most of the employees retrenched were in the global company's real estate division which is responsible for stores expansion.
Presently, Walmart operates 28 wholesale stores in India selling goods to small shopkeepers.
A statement issued by the global retailing company's India President Krish Iyer said that his company remained committed to growing its wholesale retail business in India.
"We are looking for ways to operate more efficiently that requires us to review our corporate structure in order to ensure that we are organized in the right way. As part of this review we have let go 56 of our associates," said Iyer in his statement.
