ALGIERS, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte arrived in Algiers on Thursday on a visit to discuss the Libyan crisis with Algerian leaders.

Conte is scheduled to meet with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and other senior state officials in Algeria, said the Algerian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The visit came ahead of the Berlin conference on Libya slated for Sunday.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Algeria is giving priority to the Libyan crisis in order to launch a national dialogue in the war-torn country.

As part of the international efforts to halt the infighting in Libya, a conference sponsored by Germany will host Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital Tripoli, and Khalifa Haftar, head of the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA).

The LNA has launched an offensive since last April in an attempt to take over Tripoli from the GNA.

The Berlin conference will also be attended by representatives from 11 other countries, including the U.S., Britain, Turkey, China, Italy, Algeria, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.
