BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- China has revoked nine hotels' five-star ratings including the Sheraton Haikou Hotel in the country's southern island province of Hainan due to hygiene and fire safety problems, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) said Friday.

Other problems spotted in a recent undercover inspection conducted by the ministry included the lack of mandatory items, outdated facilities and irregularities in services, according to a statement issued by the hotel rating committee of the China Tourist Hotel Association.

Another six hotels with relatively minor problems were ordered rectify issues within 12 months, the ministry said.

Statistics by the MCT showed that there were 11,000 star-rated hotels in China as of August 2019.
