Cai grabs Laax halfpipe silver, Liu takes bronze

BERNE, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese snowboarders Cai Xuetong and Liu Jiayu finished second and third respectively at the FIS Snowboard halfpipe World Cup in Laax on Saturday as Queralt Castellet of Spain and Australia's Scotty James walked away with victories.

Castellet dropped last in the first run and put down what was one of the best runs of her career, heading into run two with a dominant score of 90.00.

In their second runs, Cai and Liu both stepped it up a notch, they upped their difficulty in an attempt to topple their Spanish competitor. However, while both improved their scores, neither was able to best the 30-year-old Spaniard, with Cai finishing in second with a score of 87.25 and Liu back in third with 85.75.

Another Chinese skier Qiu Leng finished fifth in the six-woman final.

For the men's race, no Chinese athletes made it to the the final. Australian Scotty James continued his strong recent showing by taking the top spot on the podium with a score of 95.75. Japanese rider Yuto Totsuka and Taylor Gold of the United States finished second and third respectively.
