Chinese shares close higher Monday

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.66 percent, at 3,095.79 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.47 percent higher at 11,115.88 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 679.12 billion yuan (about 98.9 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 607.42 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 958 to 456 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,500 to 614 in Shenzhen.

Stocks related to the pharmaceutical industry and semi-conductors led the gains, with shares of Shijiazhuang Yiling Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. climbing by 10 percent to 14.19 yuan per share.

Shares in the airports and air transport, travel services and transgenic sectors led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.57 percent to close at 1,982.18 points Monday.
