TUNIS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Kais Saied has assigned Elyes Fakhfakh to form the new government, according to a statement by the Tunisian presidency.

The prime minister-designate should form his government within one month starting Tuesday in accordance with the constitution, said the statement released late Monday.

The proposed government should then be submitted to the parliament for a confidence vote, it added.

In a speech at the presidential palace, Fakhfakh promised to "spare no effort to form a government that lives up to this responsibility, this historic moment and the aspirations of my people."

The new government will avoid all tensions and political calculations and focus on socio-economic challenges while preserving democratic gains, he said.

It should be noted that the Tunisian parliament on Jan. 11 rejected the government proposed by last Tunisian Prime Minister-designate Habib Jemli.
