CAIRO, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian and Saudi naval forces started joint maritime drills within Egypt's territorial waters in the Red Sea, Egyptian Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The training aims to boost the skills and capabilities of the participating forces and exchange expertise between the two sides in a way that contributes to raising the combat efficiency of the naval forces of both countries," the statement said.

The statement added that the four-day drills will feature several theoretical lectures and conferences, as well as the exhibition of the arms and equipment used in the training.

The joint forces will also conduct special operations for raiding a coastal target with live ammunition.

Some other Arab and African forces also take part in the drills as observers.

Egypt regularly holds joint military exercises with other countries.
