DAVOS, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said here on Thursday that there were great opportunities for the European Union (EU) and China to cooperate on climate protection.

She also proposed to link the carbon emission trading systems of the EU and China.

Addressing the 50th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Merkel also underlined the urgency for the EU to tackle climate change.

"The question of achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement could be a question of survival for the whole continent," Merkel said.

She highlighted the importance of upholding multilateralism and international cooperation in a multipolar world, calling on world leaders to work together.

This year's WEF meeting opened on Tuesday with the theme of "Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World". Participants focus on renewing the concept of stakeholder capitalism to overcome income inequality, societal division and the climate crisis.
