TRIPOLI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan Red Crescent Society on Thursday handed over Tunisian orphan children rescued in the city of Sirte during the war on the self-styled Islamic State (IS) group a few years ago.

"Tunisian orphan children were sent back home today. They have been in Misrata for more than three years, during which they received psychological support and education," the society said in a statement.

The children were handed over to the Tunisian authorities during a ceremony in Misrata, some 250 km east of the capital Tripoli, in the presence of the Tunisian consul in Libya and foreign ministry officials.

Sirte, located 450 km east of Tripoli, used to be dominated by IS militants. Forces allied with the UN-backed government took over the city and expelled the terrorists in December 2016. Enditem
