HAVANA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Caribbean islands of Jamaica and Cuba on Tuesday.
Hitting off the coast at 2:10 p.m. local time (1910 GMT), 125 km northwest of Lucea, Jamaica, the seismic waves sparked tsunami warnings for certain coastal areas, though Cuba was not among them.
"There is no danger of a tsunami in Cuba," the head of the National Seismological Service, Enrique Arango Arias, told state-run local news website Cubadebate.
The quake was felt in Cuba's eastern provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Las Tunas; in central Cienfuegos; and in western Havana, Pinar del Rio and Isla de la Juventud.
Arango said there had been no reports of injuries or material damage.
