YAOUNDE, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least five bodies of fishermen killed by Boko Haram militants were recovered on Wednesday in Cameroon's Far North region, according to local officials.

The group of fishermen was attacked on Tuesday on the Blangoua island in the lake Chad Basin, according to security sources. They were going about their daily fishing activity when Boko Haram struck, killing them and injuring some others.

Local media on Wednesday reported the same death toll.

Boko Haram has stepped up attacks on fishermen and farmers in the Lake Chad Basin in recent times, accusing them of leaking information on the activities of the group to the military, according to Cameroon army.

In December, local authorities reported that about 50 people, mostly fishermen, have been killed in raids by Boko Haram group on Lake Chad.
