MOGADISHU, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and others including a government official injured in a roadside blast on Saturday in Mogadishu.
A police officer confirmed that two bodyguards of a deputy district commissioner in Mogadishu were killed while the official escaped death when a vehicle he was traveling in hit an improvised explosive device (IED) which was planted on the road near a local market in Dharkenley.
"The deputy district commissioner and other people were injured while two of his bodyguards were killed following the deadly explosion which also damaged his car," said a police officer who declined to be named.
No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack in the restive city but al-Qaida allied terrorist group, al-Shabab usually stages such attacks despite being driven out of Mogadishu in late 2011.
Meanwhile, sources said two simultaneous bombs hit an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) military convoy resulting in casualties.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack on the military convoy. One vehicle was destroyed during the attack at Huriwaa district.
Somalia and partner forces have intensified military operations into territory formerly controlled by al-Shabab after driving the insurgents out of Mogadishu in 2011.
Al-Shabab still controls some parts of rural southern and central Somalia and continues to carry out high-profile attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere.
