BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Velez Sarsfield midfielder Fernando Gago will require surgery after re-injuring his troublesome right knee, the Argentinian club said on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old limped off in the 69th minute of Velez's 1-1 home draw with Aldosivi in the Argentinian Superliga last Thursday.

Scans showed he suffered a "strain with a partial tear" of the surgical tissue graft used for reconstructive surgery on the same knee in 2017.

"Fernando Gago will undergo surgery on his right knee injury next Monday, February 10," Velez said in a Twitter post. "The operation will be conducted by Dr Jorge Batista. Stay strong," it added.

Gago has been beset by injuries in the past five years, having suffered three Achilles tendon tears and a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The former Real Madrid, Roma and Valencia playmaker has been capped 61 times for Argentina and was a part of the Albiceleste team that finished runners-up to Germany at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
