UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese UN envoy on Tuesday called on the Security Council to review sanctions against Sudan in a timely manner and set up a roadmap for lifting the measures.

Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, told the Security Council that China has alway supported the peace proces in Darfur of Sudan, and China welcomes the adoption of resolution 2508, which expressed the intention to regularly review the measures.

China has always believed that sanctions are not an end but a means and should always serve the political settlement of relevant issues, said the Chinese envoy, adding that the council should review sanctions against Sudan in a timely manner, and set up a roadmap for lifting sanctions in the light of the latest developments.

The UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the Sudan Sanctions Committee until March 12, 2021.

The western Sudanese region of Darfur has been plagued by a war between Sudanese government forces and the indigenous population since 2003. In 2004, the United Nations imposed an arms embargo on the region.
