BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner has approved four subway projects in Xuzhou, a major city in east China's Jiangsu Province, in a bid to further improve its public transport.

The combined investment amounted to 53.59 billion yuan (about 7.66 billion U.S. dollars). Of the total, 40 percent will come from local governments, while the remaining 60 percent will be financed by bank loans, according to a statement on the website of the National Development and Reform Commission.

The construction of one project is expected to be finished in four years, while the other three will be finished within five years.

Upon the completion of the four projects, Xuzhou will boast six subway lines, with a total length of 146 km.

With a registered population of 10.45 million, Xuzhou, known as Pengcheng in ancient times, is a national complex transport hub.
