Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.05 percent to end at 2,984.97 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.58 percent higher at 11,306.49 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 999.95 billion yuan (about 143.2 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 937.2 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 1,016 to 424 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,734 to 404 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the electronics sector led the gains, with shares of the semiconductor company China Wafer Level CSP Co.,Ltd. based in east China's Jiangsu Province surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 114.95 yuan.

Film companies and broadcasters also notched solid gains, as shares of the film industry giant Wanda Film Holding Co.,Ltd. climbing 2.61 percent to 17.31 yuan apiece.

Bucking the upward trend, shares in the banking sector led the losses, with China Merchants Bank Co.,Ltd. edging down 1.3 percent to 35.7 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.15 percent to close at 2,170.95 points.
