RIGA, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Grain farmers in Latvia saw a bumper harvest last year, the Baltic country's largest yet, according to preliminary results released on Thursday by the national statistics office.
The total amount of grain harvested in Latvia in 2019 was 3.2 million tons, an increase of 53.8 percent from a year ago.
The average grain yield was 42.6 quintals per hectare, the second highest ever recorded in Latvia. In 2015 grain yield averaged at 44.9 quintals per hectare, statistics showed.
In 2019, Latvia also set a new grain export record, shipping 2.8 million tons of grain and grain products to foreign countries, mainly Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Turkey. The value of last year's grain exports totaled 518 million euros (560 million U.S. dollars).
In 2019, the total grain crop area in Latvia expanded by 7.5 percent year on year to a record of 742,300 hectares. (1 euro =1.08 U.S. dollars)
