SANTIAGO, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A first-half goal from teenager Rodney Redes handed 10-man Guarani a 1-0 victory over Chile's Palestino in the first leg of their third round Copa Libertadores qualifier.
The Paraguayan side suffered a major blow just after the half-hour mark when midfielder Fernando Barrientos was sent off for a second rash challenge in the space of 20 minutes.
However the visitors continued to look dangerous on the counterattack and 19-year-old winger Redes put them ahead on the stroke of halftime by lashing in a left-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.
A draw in next Thursday's second leg in Asuncion will be enough to earn Guarani a place in the Copa Libertadores group stage.
The Copa Libertadores is South America's top club competition, comprising teams from each of the South American Football Confederation's 10 member nations.
