TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Interior Ministry announced Sunday that 42.57 percent of eligible Iranians took part in the recent parliamentary elections, Press TV reported.

The Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said that "there were more than 57.92 million eligible voters in the country ... and 24.51 million people cast their votes in the ballot boxes."

Out of the total, "48 percent are women and 52 percent are men," Rahmani Fazli was quoted as saying.

Iranians went to the polls on Friday to elect hopefuls for the 290-seat parliament.

Rahmani Fazli said the turnout was "quite acceptable" given the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country in addition to the country's political circumstances over the past months.

According to the latest release of the results, principlists have occupied over 80 percent of the seats. Reformists and other individual nominees won the rest.
