RAMALLAH, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Thursday declared that the Universal Postal Union (UPU) has recognized its right to have direct postal exchange with the world via Jordan without restrictions.

The Palestinian government said in a press statement late on Thursday that the UPU council meeting in Bern has concluded with a decision to grant Palestine the right for free postal. Exchange and collection of its final destination postal fees have been collected by Israel since 1995.

According to the statement, the UPU council meeting will support Palestine's postage services through developmental projects.

Palestine has been given an observer status of the UN's UPU since 1999, allowing it to receive mail directly. In 2008, it stated that it was entitled to collection of mail related revenues.

However, Palestine's postal sector has been brokered via Israel.
