Coronavirus cases rise to 79 in Austria

VIENNA, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen new cases of coronavirus infection were reported in Austria on Saturday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases here to 79, according to health authorities.

As of Saturday, the coronavirus has been detected in all nine federal states of the Alpine country, including 28 cases in Vienna, 23 in Lower Austria, seven in Tyrol, six in Styria, five in Salzburg, four each in Upper Austria and Burgenland, and one each in the states of Vorarlberg and Carinthia.

According to the health ministry's website, 4,308 tests have been carried out across the country by Saturday afternoon.

Austria is planning drastic measures to contain the virus. As Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said at a press briefing on Friday evening, "selective health checks" are to be introduced on the border with Italy from next week.
