Shanghai calls for supporting female medical staff fighting coronavirus

SHANGHAI, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai have made donations for female medical staff who are fighting against the novel coronavirus, according to a local press conference on Sunday.

The Shanghai Women's Federation made the donation of masks and other materials, said Weng Wenlei, deputy president of the federation.

The donations have been provided to Shanghai's medical teams that were sent to central China's Hubei Province, 133 Shanghai-based hospitals and some hospitals in Hubei.

Family members of the female medical staff in Hubei were also provided with housekeeping and other services, according to Weng.

A total of 189,700 women are engaged in medical work in Shanghai including medical treatment, scientific research, nursing and disease prevention, who accounted for 73 percent of the city's medical staff, said Zheng Jin, spokesperson for the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission.

Of them, 1,649 medical staff volunteered to aid Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak, according to Zheng.

March 8 is International Women's Day.
