COLOMBO, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's state-owned Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has opened a tender for generation of 150 mega watts of solar power, local media reported here Tuesday.

The tender, which closes on May 21, calls for international competitive bids to establish solar power plants with individual capacities ranging from 3 to 10 mega watts on a build-own-operate basis.

According to the tender, the project proponent is required to design, finance, procure, construct, commission, operate and maintain the solar PV power plant and all associated equipment or services.

The proponent must also enter into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the CEB.

It is hoped that this new schemes will help Sri Lanka reach its target of generating 200 mega watts from solar power by the end of 2020.

Sri Lanka hopes to generate 1 GW of energy through renewables by 2025 and meet it's entire energy requirement through renewables by 2050.

CEB has a total installed capacity of 2,684 mega watts, of which 1,207 mega watt is generated from hydropower and 1,290 mega watt is generated from thermal power.
