Africa's COVID-19 death toll reaches 64 as 2412 cases confirmed in 43 countries: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the African continent has reached 64 as confirmed positives cases surpassed 2,412 as of Wednesday, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) revealed on Wednesday.

The Africa CDC, specialized agency of the 55-member African Union (AU), in its latest situation update issued on Wednesday revealed 14 African countries have so far reported 64 deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The highly coronavirus-affected African countries include South Africa with 709 cases, Egypt with 402 cases, Algeria with 264 cases and Morocco with 170 cases as of Wednesday morning, according to the Africa CDC.

Africa CDC also disclosed that some 203 people who have been infected with the COVID-19 have recovered across 14 countries.

Amid the rapid spread of the virus across the African continent, figures from the Africa CDC also show that more than 624 new confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported across the continent since the center's recent report on Tuesday morning.

The number of deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic rose to 64 as of early Wednesday from 58 that was reported on early Tuesday, while the number of people who have recovered from the virus has also increased from 184 early Tuesday to 203 as of Wednesday morning, according to the Africa CDC.
