WINDHOEK, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's flagship airport, the Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA), has been designated as a diversion airport for overflight operations and shall remain open during the COVID-19 lockdown from March 27 to April 16, an official said Friday.

Namibia Airports Company spokesperson Dan Kamati said the airport shall have a full team of airport rescue and fire fighting services in place and a skeleton team will be maintained at the airport.

Kamati said a second airport located in Windhoek, the Eros Airport, will also remain open to cater for cargo flights and emergency operations.

"The operational hours of the airport will, however, be reduced to 08:00-17:00 (local time). Similar to HKIA, the airport shall have a full airport rescue and fire fighting services team in place whereas the rest of the team members in other key areas of operations will be on standby to render the services as and when required," he added.

Meanwhile, Kamati said, the other smaller airports, including the Walvis Bay International Airport, shall be closed to airport operations during the period.
