COPENHAGEN, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The test capacity for COVID-19 in Denmark has increased to 5,000 a day, said a press release from the Danish Regions authority on Friday.

"I am proud of the fact that through hard work we have increased the test capacity to a level where we will be able to test five times as many Danes," said Stephanie Lose, chairperson of the Danish Regions.

Currently, Denmark tests 1,000 per day on average.

Nevertheless, Soren Brostrom, director general of the Danish Health Authority, reacted to the news by calling for an even greater increase.

"5,000 is a clear requirement for the regions that we expect here and now. But we want upwards of 10,000, and even higher," said Brostrom.

According to Friday's figures from the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), a governmental public health and research institution under the Danish Ministry of Health, 17,275 Danes have so far been tested for COVID-19, with infections in the country now standing at 2,010, and 52 deaths from COVID-19.
