BEIRUT, March 27 (Xinhua) -- A senior UN official urged Arab governments to establish a regional fund to support Arab countries amid the COVID-19 outbreak, local Lebanese media reported Friday.
"The fund aims at helping the least developed countries, while ensuring an accelerated response to the needs of Arab people, and providing relief in cases of food shortages and health emergencies," UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.
The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon.
Dashti also called on regional powers and the international community to build a just and lasting peace in a bid to be able to win over COVID-19.
"I call on all regional parties and the international community, to announce an immediate humanitarian truce, and make unremitting efforts to build a just and lasting peace," Dashti said.
Dashti warned that invaluable lives will be lost due to this virus and millions of jobs and revenues will also be lost while a lot of people will fall into poverty. She also noted that millions of refugees will be deprived from humanitarian assistance due to this virus.
"COVID-19 is an unprecedented threat that calls for unprecedented solidarity," she said.
