Tokyo Olympics to open on July 23, 2021

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics, postponed last week over COVID-19 concerns, will be held from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021.

TOKYO, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed last week over novel coronavirus concerns, will be held from July 23 to Aug. 8 next year, local media reported Monday.

Several officials from Tokyo Metropolitan Government told public broadcaster NHK that the Tokyo Olympics will open on July 23, 2021, while the Paralympic Games will open on Aug. 24 of the same year.

According to the officials, the International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo Games organizing committee, the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government all agreed on the new schedule.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics had originally been scheduled to take place from July 24 to Aug. 9 this year, but were put off due to the coronavirus pandemic.
