NAIROBI, April 2 (Xinhua) -- He may be locked down in Kashiwa, Japan owing to the havoc the coronavirus has wreaked on the sports calendar, but Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga has sent home relief aid to support the fight against the pandemic.
With Kenya under partial lockdown with restricted movement, many Kenyans living in slums and poor areas have no access to facial masks, soap and sanitizers.
However, Olunga has moved in to alleviate the crisis and give a helping hand.
"It was my pleasure to lend a hand towards preventing the spread of COVID-19 by donating sanitizers and hand washes to small business owners, churches, carwashes, children homes and a few households across Nairobi's low-income estates," Olunga said on Thursday.
The Kenyan striker used his family and friends to distribute the supply to the less privileged. Olunga has been in self-isolation at his Kashiwa-based club in Japan.
"We have been given a routine by the club physiotherapists, we are following this workout to keep us fit and we still don't know when the resumption of the league will be, we have to stay fit. I just want to urge everybody to take this virus seriously and take the steps that the World Health Organization (WHO) has provided to combat this deadly virus," Olunga added.
Other Kenyan sportsmen who have also joined hands with authorities to help include national team captain Victor Wanyama, midfielder Johannah Omollo and Francis Kahata.
Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has also called on the elite runners to keep safe distances while minding their own health and safety.
"To the people of Kenya and around the world let's be mindful of washing our hands and practice social distancing to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. I hope that you and your families are well in this time and that you stay positive. We are in this together," Kipchoge said.
