Tokyo stocks surge in morning as coronavirus death toll slows

TOKYO, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks advanced sharply Monday morning, as investors took heart in a slowing daily death toll in Europe and the United States from the coronavirus, with a weak yen adding support.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 429.38 points, or 2.41 percent, from Friday to 18,249.57.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 24.40 points, or 1.84 percent, at 1,349.53.

Information and communication, pharmaceutical and transportation equipment issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
