BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 jolted 86 km northeast of Hihifo, Tonga around 23:30 (1130 GMT) on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey has said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 15.3064 degrees south latitude and 173.285 degrees west longitude.

Hihifo, the largest village on the island of Niuatoputapu, northern Tonga, has recorded multiple earthquakes between 5.0 and 6.9 magnitude in recent years, though usually with few casualties or damage reported.

The island was badly damaged in the 2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami with a number of people killed.
