MOSCOW, April 7 (Xinhua) -- To ensure the safety and health of Russian citizens is the main goal of the country's authorities in their fight against the spread of the coronavirus, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday.

"All our decisions must be proportionate to the threat and appropriate to the situation," Putin said at a teleconference with medical experts on the development of the situation regarding coronavirus infection and measures for its containment.

"At the same time, it is important to ensure conditions for the quickest recovery of economic and business activity," he said, according to an official Kremlin transcript.

According to Putin, as the peak of the epidemic has not yet passed in Russia, it was extremely important to avoid the mistakes of others, draw lessons and make conclusions based on the position of the medical and scientific community.

As of Tuesday, Russia officially registered a total of 7,497 cases of COVID-19 in 81 out of its 85 regions, with the number of infections rising by a new daily record of 1,154, up from 954 a day before.

The death toll rose to 58, while 494 people have recovered.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Putin has ordered a paid leave for all residents until the end of April, while most of the country's regions have introduced mandatory self-isolation for all residents for this period.
