THE HAGUE, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the Netherlands exceeded the 20,000 mark on Wednesday, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

The number of people tested positive grew by 969 to a total of 20,549, although the actual number of infections would be higher as not everyone who may be infected is tested, said the RIVM.

Meanwhile, the number of reported deaths rose by 147 to a total of 2,248.

There are major regional differences in the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Most people, or 4,799, who have tested positive live in the southern province of North-Brabant, accounting for almost a quarter of the total number of confirmed infections.

The northern province of Groningen, with 227 positively tested people, has the least number of infections.
