MUMBAI, April 13 (Xinhua) -- India's leading digital payment platform Paytm and Quick Service Restaurant McDonald's India have joined hands to distribute safe and hygienic food to health care workers serving COVID-19 patients in Mumbai, as a small token of gratitude towards these warriors, a statement by McDonald's said Monday.
The two companies collaborated to distribute close to 600 McDonald's burgers in a safe and contactless manner to the healthcare workers at a civic hospital in Mumbai on Sunday.
"The healthcare professionals fighting on the frontlines of this battle against COVID-19 need all the support they can get during these extraordinary times. We will keep on adding cities where we will supply these kits," said Siddharth Pandey, vice president of Paytm.
In the last two weeks, McDonald's has associated with multiple NGOs and organizations across cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad to reach out to close to 10,000 frontline workers, daily-wage earners and slum dwellers.
Healthcare workers in Mumbai are running the risk of infection due to rising cases and unavailability of adequate safeguard tools to protect themselves. So far over 100 medical staff at hospitals have got infected to COVID-19 and a few hospitals have been sealed, media reports said.
As per last official update, India has 7,987 active cases of COVID-19 with 308 deaths. Among them, 1,298 cases are from Mumbai with 92 deaths.
